Building a community of lifelong learners
At WeAreLAToo, our goal is to raise awareness about stigma and its effects at Cal State LA. We aim to provide resources and to create a brave space for students, faculty, staff, and alumni to share their lived experiences without judgment. Most importantly, we aim to create an easily-accessible space where people can feel connected to one another through the sharing of stories, reminding each that they are not alone in their journey at Cal State LA.
WeAreLAToo was first developed in the summer of 2022 as a dedicated space for sociology students in Civic Learning to use the power of the internet to bring about positive change at CalStateLA. The first team of 26 students began gathering the stories of stigmatized students on our campus, as well as developing plans for content, formatting, networking, and assessment. Each year, a new cohort of Civic Learning students picks up the torch, building upon what was developed by previous teams of students, and furthering our overall project objective:
To break down stigma at CalStateLA by capturing, elevating, and celebrating the voices of students in the margins.
It is our hope that through ongoing collaboration between the passionate, brilliant minds on the WeAreLAToo teams each year, this space will reach its fullest potential, ultimately having a positive impact on students at CalStateLA by breaking down the stereotypes, prejudices, and discrimination faced by marginalized groups on our campus and reducing the negative effects of stigmatization. We welcome all feedback, so if you have a suggestion or would like your story included in our space, please reach out using our "Contact Us" page.
