Cal State LA joins the cohort of First-gen forward which now recognizes and supports over 200 institutions across 3 cohorts. Selected institutions will have professional development, community-building experiences, and a first look at the center’s research and resources.
Cal State LA’s Career Center can help explore career options, plan actions to prepare you after graduating, and help apply for jobs that can launch your career and build community with others. Their services include career advising, workshops on different career paths, and assist with applying to jobs and speaking with different employers.
Surge CSULA is a student-led organization that advocates for Dreamers and undocumented students. Surge provides resources for students that provide workshops for renewing DACA applications, STEM conferences, and other community based events that help undocumented students find a sense of belonging on and off campus.
The Erika J. Glazer Family Dreamers Resource Center supports undocumented students with numerous programs and resources aimed to ensure students academic, emotional, and personal well-being while on campus. The center also provides legal assistance with DACA and other immigration-related needs and is available for free to Cal State LA students, faculty, and staff. The Dreamers Resource Center is located on the 4th floor of the Student Services Building and provides a study space, computers and printers, a conference room, and additional resources and referrals for students.

When applying for financial aid, being a first generation American may be confusing and stressful, but financial aid offers To fill out paperwork, meet with a financial assistance advisor in person or by Zoom.

The Center for First Generation Student Success is a great website that provides many tools and resources for first generation college students. They believe that first generation college students face many struggles and many of them don’t have the right support. This center works closely with other partners and companies across the country who strive to help college students in their education and career. Through research, programs, engagement, scholarships and networks, college students are able to find tools during and after their academic career that can help them be successful.
The Clay Center for Young Minds Mission is to prevent, reduce, and de-stigmatize some issues young individuals can go through. This center has great resources that touch on mental, emotional and the behavioral well-being of young people through the use of multimedia, narratives, podcasts and short videos and films. This website talks about guilt, shame, confusion and anxiety first generation students can experience. Not only is this Center great at navigating and handling stigma, but also touches up in self stigma which is a conversation many aren’t having.
Rise First is a website that aims to help first generation low income students and professionals nationwide. This resource is able to focus on first generation news, events, blogs, forums and career related topics including job search, networking and mentorship. Because this is a resource that focuses on low income students, it is not only able to provide academic resources but financial ones as well.
The First-Gen Lounge Podcast is a podcast for first generation scholars and professionals. Hosted by Evingerlean D.B. Hudson, Ph.D, one is able to listen to her podcast where she talks about real life experiences as a first generation student herself. Dr. Eve talks about real life experiences she faced while being in college and she gives tips and advice on what exactly first generation college students can do to succeed in college and where to turn if they ever need help.
The First Gen Journey podcast is a podcast hosted by Dr. Elisa Hernandez who has devoted her career to working with college students at both public and private colleges and universities. In her podcast she talks about real life and academic struggles and experiences she has gone through. She touches on how difficult it can get even at home with family members who don’t understand what exactly first generation students face or feel. First Gen Journey features interviews with first generation college students of different backgrounds and careers making it a place where students can relate.
The Center for Academic Success is available to all students and its goal is to provide students with necessary tools to succeed. The center is a community that can help others and ourselves to make a difference in our academic success.
