The Guardian’s Scholar Program supports the success of Cal State LA students who are current or former foster youth, wards of the court, or were previously under legal guardianship. It provides a wide range of services that include: educational counseling and academic advisement, financial aid guidance, priority registration, book grants, transportation subsidies, on-campus housing support and career exploration workshops. Do you want to be civically engaged? The California Youth Connection is an organization founded to change policies and advocate for the needs of youth in care. Through the CYC, many policies and laws have been passed to improve the childcare welfare system . Youth have been able to gain job skills, education and career connections, and most importantly a community of peers. If you are interested in volunteering to voice your thoughts about policies and laws that should be changed to improve the lives of youth in the system, please check out the website.
The California Department of Social Services provides a resources section of available college support programs, this includes information about the Educational Opportunity Program (EOP), Extended Opportunity Program and Services ( EOPS), Guardian Scholars and NextUP. It also provides financial aid resources available to foster youth, this includes CalGrant/CA Dream Act, Pell Grant, California College Promise Grant and so much more.It also provides additional links for other resources for college and career success. The Alliance for Children’s Rights is an organization that provides services for current or former foster youth. They provide legal support, assistance with housing and educational resources. Their mission is to ensure that young adults who are or were in foster care or on probation and are between ages 16 and 24 know their legal rights and entitlements. The Youth Moving On Peer Resource Center is a drop in center in Pasadena that serves transition-age youth (16-25). They assist youth in their transition into stable and successful adult living. They provide a wide range of services that include : job skills workshops, career and educational planning, life skill development, food, school supplies, LGBTQ support groups and so much more.
