Cal State LA's College of Engineering, Computer Science, and Technology offers programs to support incoming freshmen and transfer students:
STEP: A mandatory program for incoming Pre-Engineering and Pre-Computer Science freshmen, focusing on math skills and building a support network to ease the transition to college.
FYRE at ECST: A cohort-based program that follows STEP, offering hands-on courses and block scheduling to promote retention. Staff advisors and peer mentors help guide students through their first year.
STAR: Designed for transfer students, STAR partners with community colleges to create clear pathways into ECST majors, providing peer mentoring before and after transfer to support academic success.
These programs help freshmen and transfer students build a solid foundation for their academic and professional futures.
Transfer students make up two-thirds of Cal State LA’s English majors and graduate at high rates. Before transferring, complete as much lower-division GE as possible, including the CSU GE Areas A2 and A3 requirements. Take at least two literature courses beyond what’s required for writing courses, noting that only two will count toward the major.
Cal State LA offers two undergraduate English options: the General Option and the Single Subject Credential Option. Both require ENGL 2900 and six upper-division courses in language, theory, and literature, which must be taken at Cal State LA (no substitutions with lower-division courses). Plan to enroll in ENGL 2900 during your first term.
The EPIC Summer Youth Employment Program at Cal State LA is a fantastic opportunity for incoming students to get to know the university while earning some extra cash during the summer. This program, in partnership with Para Los Niños, offers paid work experience for low-income youth, allowing participants to work in various University departments for four weeks alongside full-time professional staff. Not only does it provide valuable job experience, but it also offers an inside look at the campus, giving you a head start before transitioning to university life.
In addition to hands-on job training, the program includes sessions on college admissions, financial aid, and student support services like the Equal Opportunity Program (EOP) and the First Year Experience. These resources help participants understand the benefits of a university education and build connections within the Cal State LA community, making the transition to a four-year university smoother and more rewarding.
